Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity in 2025?
Monash Health is looking for people, who want to make a positive impact on others, to volunteer at the Kingston Centre as part of Montessori for Ageing and Dementia Care project.
The project is a joint venture with Monash University.
Once trained, the volunteers will work in partnership with staff, engaging in purposeful, everyday interactions with patients to maintain their independence, choice memory, mobility and create purpose.
Grace has been volunteering at Kingston for almost a year.
‘I decided to get involved in volunteering because I enjoyed learning new things and meeting new people. I was also hoping that I could be a positive influence in other people’s lives,’ said Grace.
The post-graduate student volunteers for 3 to 4 hours a week, engaging meaningfully with vulnerable and ageing members of our community.
‘On one occasion, a patient mentioned that he wanted to have positive thinking, so I helped him by asking questions about his hobby and other things that made him happy. On another day, one of the patients wanted to get some fresh air, so my fellow volunteer and I accompanied them to one of the hospital gardens.’
‘I really enjoy talking to patients and listening to their stories. I love learning about their cultures as well, a lot of them come from different countries. And I like working together with my fellow volunteers, as well as with staff members on the wards,’ Grace said.
