Welcome to our 2024 Medical Intern cohort

This month we welcomed 125 Medical Interns to Monash Health – the largest cohort in Victoria!

Acting Chief Executive, Martin Keogh, welcomed the Interns on their first day of orientation, highlighting the many opportunities available to them through a career with Monash Health.

“Working at Monash Health is a calling for many of our people – an opportunity to provide safe, high-quality care and make a real difference,” he said.

During orientation, the Interns will attend a mix of online and face-to-face seminars and webinars, and a shadow shift onsite with their outgoing intern counterparts.

They will also attend a mix of interactive presentations on professional, patient-focused and clinical topics from Monash Doctors Education, Monash Doctors Workforce, the EMR team, Pharmacy, Aboriginal Health and different clinical areas.

Orientation week aims to equip Interns with the skills, knowledge and professionalism they need to transition from student to doctor in the Monash Health environment, to perform well in their first month and beyond.

Karen Yates, Medical Education Officer, Intern Lead, says it is a challenging but rewarding year for the Interns, but “they are fully supported by Monash Doctor’s Workforce and Monash Doctor’s Education to ensure they reach their full potential.”

Interns will be placed at Monash Medical Centre, Dandenong, Kingston, Moorabbin and Casey hospitals across an array of units, including General Medicine, Mental Health, Emergency Medicine (including Paediatrics), Urology and Palliative Care – just to name a few!

They will rotate through different units across 5 terms ranging between 10 to 12 weeks, and will work as part of the inpatient multidisciplinary team supervised and supported by more senior medical staff.

Throughout the year, they will be provided with comprehensive general experience across emergency, acute and critical care, surgery/peri-operative care, and chronic illness. This experience provides our junior doctors with broad exposure to medicine in different settings and a solid foundation to begin their careers.

Our Interns will no doubt feel a little nervous and overwhelmed as they establish themselves in the Monash Health way of life.

Please help them feel welcome and supported as they take this huge step in the next phase of their career.

Welcome, Interns of 2024!
